Our Family–Our Type of Crazy

My father was a marriage counselor for many years.  He would often say, “we compare everyone to our own standards for ‘normal’ and label anything or anyone outside of that as ‘weird, crazy,’ or ‘messed up.’  The truth, though, is that our standard of normal is probably on everyone else’s list for ‘crazy.'”

And, without question, even by our own standards, Crocketts are crazy. Should you drop by unexpectedly, you might find us all watching a show, sitting around the kitchen table talking about religion or reading scriptures.  Definitely food would be involved.  And deep, real laughter.

My grandparents house was such a place.  Their home was an icon for “heaven on earth.”  Hanging inconspicuously in the pool room (pool table) was a wooden placard, the words thereon reflected precisely how I felt at Grandma and Grandpa’s home.  And today, the words reflect what I hope others feel when entering into my own home.

Guests

You are welcome here; be at your ease…

Get up when you’re ready, go to bed when you please.

Happy to share with you such as we’ve got,

the leaks in the roof, and the soup in the pot.

You don’t have to thank us or laugh at our jokes,

Sit deep and come often.  You’re one of the folks.
